Paolo Rotili – a Portrait

Paolo Rotili – a Portrait

Paolo Rotili – a Portrait

With the occasion of Meridian International Festival in Bucharest, Romania (5-10 December 2011) we had the occasion to meet many guests from other countries of the world. There were many composers and interpreters present, and we had the opportunity to share our impressions and knowledge of music, to compare cultures and to make new friends. One very important encounter, though, had been the one that the students of the National University of Music in Bucharest (UNMB) had with the Italian composer Paolo Rotili. Having two works performed in the Festival, he also took part in a composition workshop at the UNMB, a workshop dedicated to students in composition and musicology.

Paolo Rotili is a very special musician. He is one of the top Italian composers and professors of composition of present times, an innovator as well as a keeper of modern tradition. I was impressed to observe many similarities between his way of thinking music and the Romanian mainstream musical thinking, promoted by composers such as Octavian Nemescu (although not having been introduced to one another earlier, they discovered they had many things in common).

Paolo Rotili started the study of music composition in the ‘70s; a very interesting element of his artistic biography is that he has undergone musical studies twice, in order to specialize in two branches – music composition and electronic music. He studied with Mauro Bartolotti, one of the most important avant-garde musicians in Rome (student of Goffredo Petrassi and a constant participant in Darmstadt summer classes of composition, thus being acquainted to the main artistic experiences of the ‘50s and ‘60s.

Thus, Paolo Rotili studied along with the unveiling of the avant-garde trend, but as we well know, the beginning of the ‘80s brought along the crisis of the musical streams related to avant-garde. Composers had started to question the possibilities of communication through the means of music, the possibilities of having an interested public for the contemporary music. These issues had not previously been questioned by the avant-garde; but the contrary. The promoters of avant-garde music often blamed others of searching only the success in front of the public; and not the originality. Today, when our world is totally under the reign of the economic logic, such a thought would make everybody smile.  But in those times, art still had an educational value, aiming towards the emancipation of man and also a political function. Avant-garde music has always found the conceptual motivation as being self-sufficient and more important that the musical work itself. Therefore, the concept mattered – and not the music.

Paolo Rotili had to make an important choice: he did not want to look for the commercial success and also did not feel inclined towards the avant-garde rhetoric. He aimed for a personal style of composition that was not at all auto-referential.

The first element that characterizes his music is the lack of a coherent style, that is, of homogenous musical elements. In order to make a composition be interesting, he uses all the materials available, considered not just simple elements (intervals, rhythms etc.) but complex structures of a linguistic structure. He operates with puzzles of already-known musical languages using the processes of accumulation and contrast in order to give a vivid and interesting perception to his music. Therefore, the musical form is born from the game of contrasts and from the continuity of the fragments of musical memories, torn from their historical context, in order to become elements of a new narration.

A good example for this idea is his work – Loose for seven instruments, written in 1986, a work that characterizes Paolo Rotili’s first stage of creation (the completion of his musical studies). It consists of 3 parts and it is build following the main principles of musical narration; it brings together several elements that differ greatly from one another.

Another element that characterizes his music is that of researching the roots of complexity in creation. By roots, Paolo Rotili means the natural, biological conditions of the human being and his / her possibilities of communication with others. The interval of fifth is such a root. The origins of music are to be found in vocal music, but the human voice is produced by means of the anatomical elements that make the sound happen. We already know it functions as a tube and today we know all about the harmonics and their tendency to aim towards a fundamental sound. Rotili explains that the interval of fifth projects into the linguistic structures in a most profound way. This hypothesis represents a metaphor that Rotili used in order to compose several musical works, such as Lembo di vento, canto del tempo (1995) – a “serenade” dedicated to his wife and the musical idea is that of an Aeolian sound that transforms into music, into song, a voyage from simplicity to complexity and it represents the metaphor of passing from nature to history.

In the same category we place Paolo Rotili’s first work that has been performed during Meridian Festival, impeccably played by one of our most talented flutists, Ana Chifu: …e nel tempo si disperde for solo flute, written in 1997 and dedicated to Mario Caroli. This musical work has many elements that characterize Paolo Rotili’s music: narration, timbral effects and musical memory. Another important element is the form of the work: the time gradually slows down as in an immense rallentando with the dissipation of energy.

Paolo Rotili attended the courses of Santa Cecilia Conservatory for the second time in his life when he felt the need of a change in his way of thinking and perceiving music, in order to study electronic music. He started using literary texts in music (Donne, Ariosto) and also started creating multimedia works, with music, video and texts. He explains that he has chosen this path in order to give a clearer and more referential value to his music. In the contact with other media, his creation gained a major transparence and liberty. Canzon sopra canzon is a good example of this aesthetic – it has been performed by Traiect Ensemble in Meridian Festival. It is a quintet written in 2009 and it is built on one of Girolamo Cavazzoni’s ancient polyphonic works, an instrumental 4 part canzon.

The workshop with Paolo Rotili proved to be a very good experience for the students of UNMB. We had the chance of discussing with him about contemporary music and to learn about new aesthetics that are currently valued throughout Europe; also, we had the chance of discussion about our own compositions and to receive good pieces of advice for our future careers as composers. We thank him very much for his presence in Romania and especially at the National University of Music in Bucharest and we wish him all the best in his career.

Portret Dana Andreea Nigrim

Portret Dana Andreea Nigrim

Nocturna  în do #  minor

Angiol di pace by Vincenzo Bellini, vocal duett

Marie Gisèle Labarre and Dana Andreea Nigrim, Radu Palade piano

Tatăl ei, fiul epigramistului Nicolae Grigore Nigrim, a organizat adesea acasă serate literare.
